There’s something about the Eurovision song contest that I find irresistible. Maybe it’s the fact that few of the entrants seem particularly talented; or maybe that the nation they represent actually thought “Yes, this is the musical act we think best represents us on the European stage”; or maybe it’s the extravagant outfits and flamboyant performances.
The outfits worn by the performers at Eurovision can not only be extravagantly over the top but are more often than not a stereotypical representation of the fashion of the time. With that in mind, I thought I would take a look at what performers have worn at Eurovision finals throughout the decades.
Here is a sampling of my favourites:
Spectacular gowns from the 1960s.

Lale Andersen from Germany in 1961(left) and Conny Froboess from Germany in 1962 (right).
It wouldn’t be a Eurovision fashion spotlight without ABBA in 1974!

Matching jumpsuits from the 1970s (with purple flares) and into the 1980s (angular and spacey with bow ties).

Nicole & Hugo from Belgium in 1973 (left) and Sophie and Magaly from Luxembourg in 1980 (right).
Big hair, over the top shoulder pads and some fluro… it would have to be the 1980s.

Belle & The Devotions from the UK in 1984 (left) and Kate from Norway in 1987 (right).
The decade of the girl groups, the 1990s.

Mekado from Germany in 1994 (left) and ENI from Croatia in 1997 (right).

Ha! Thanks for this. Now I’m seeing it as the Olympics of music. I could get into that!
I was sort of appalled looking at the 70s era fashions, but I don’t know…I think I marginally prefer skin-tight satin to skin-tight neon spandex!
Haha! Yes, I do believe I’d much prefer skin-tight satin to neon spandex!
I can’t get over the amount of jumpsuits that were on display in the 70s. Scary stuff!
